A wonderful early 20th-century work by the Hungarian artist Ernő Barta, depicting two figures in traditional Hungarian costume carrying richly decorated religious banners. Their elaborate dress is rendered with remarkable attention to detail, from the intricately embroidered skirts and ornate sleeves to the distinctive headdresses, while the colourful banners create a striking focal point. Executed in delicate washes of colour, the composition has a gentle, almost dreamlike quality, while also providing a fascinating record of Hungarian folk costume, religious tradition and ceremonial life. Signed in plate and signed in graphite. Well presented in a simple dark frame. On paper.

Condition

Some marks and minor discolouration to the paper. Light foxing to the paper. The frame has minor surface wear and scuffs. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.

Artist Biography

Ernő Barta (1878-1956) was a Hungarian painter, book illustrator, and graphic designer. He attended the School of Applied Arts in Budapest, before studying at the private schools of Anton Ažbe and Hugo Wolf in Munich until 1903. He was also a member of the Munich Secession movement. Barta worked as a caricaturist for the magazine Borsszem Jankó in Budapest, before working in Berlin and Dresden from 1907 to 1912. He then opened a graphic studio in Budapest in 1916, and later worked in the Netherlands from 1938 to 1939.
