Description

A superb c.1840 English School half-length portrait of a lady in an ermine stole and lace cap. The lady's face is flushed with colour as she gazes her chestnut eyes to the left. Tight curls frame and elongate the sitter's face, drawing your attention to the gold pendant hanging from the lady's porcelain neck. Textures of fur, silk and fine lace have been mastered by the artist in this powerful portrait of social status. The painting has been presented in a smart gilt effect frame with lambs tongue running pattern to the inner window. Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

The painting has undergone previous restoration. The portrait has been professionally cleaned and the canvas relined. Widespread craquelure has been stabilised and filled. Some areas of blistering to the surface of the portrait. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting to the artwork. The modern gilt frame is in good condition with little wear. The overall condition of the portrait is extremely good for its age and has been lovingly restored.
