English School c.1880 Oil Original Frame- Victorian Gentleman with Newspaper
Description
A very fine example of English Victorian portraiture, this depiction of a finely dressed gentleman is of excellent quality. The sitter is depicted in a smart black afternoon suit with wing collar and black bow tie. His gold pocket watch chain glints in the dark folds of his waistcoat and he holds a newspaper, half folded, in his hands. A small inkwell and quill can be seen in the background to the right edge. His calm and steady expression gives the impression of a worldly and powerful man. The painting is unsigned and handsomely presented in its original 19th Century gilt frame with laurel and berry strap work and a fluted cove. On canvas.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of restoration. there is some craquelure to the surface. there are three small paint losses to the left side of the man's head (each about 2mm). there is very minor slack to the canvas a the upper edge. The frame has some tarnishing and some minor areas of restoration.
