This large and impressive oil is a fine example of 19th century English School painting. The artist has captured an idyllic English cottage that looks to have been standing for hundreds of years. This quaint homestead is full of chocolate box romanticism, the foliage growing around the exterior walls, thatched roof and woodland setting combine to create a stylized depiction of rural life. The handling of light and dark tones has been expertly mastered by the artist, the shaded oppressive darkness of the wood in the distance highlights the warmth and safety of the cottage. Two figures can be seen conversing in the foreground who we assume are a mother and son, while a young female figure is seated on a tree stump closer to the cottage. Each have been delicately captured with great attention given to the clothing and demeanour.

Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including areas of discolouration and craquelure. The canvas has been re-lined and there are further areas of restoration. Inspection under UV light reveals touches of overpainting to the lower right corner. This is very minimal. With a further small area of restoration to the upper left corner. The frame has suffered from knocks and scuffing. With very small losses to the gilt moulding.
