Description

A fine gouache depiction of the imposing Mount Vesuvius, smoke billowing from the summit, looming over the Bay of Naples on the South-Western coast of Italy. The gulf area is known for its proximity to both the Ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as Mount Vesuvius, which is depicted centrally here. It has a long tradition of being depicted in art as an area of outstanding natural beauty. The artist has signed to the lower left and the painting has been presented in a simple gilt frame with card mount. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is light foxing. The frame has tarnishing, denting and scuffing.
