Elsie Barling was a teacher, painter and draughtsman who was born in Newnham, Gloucestershire. Little is known about her early life or training, and she appears to have been largely self-taught. After the death of her father, she supported the family by teaching in schools. At Queen Bertha’s School, Birchington, she and the pupils made a mural of the landing of Queen Bertha. John Craxton, taught by her at Betteshanger School, Eastry, in the early 1930's called her 'an inspired teacher'. Pupils’ work was shown at Bloomsbury Gallery in 1933 opened by Slade principal Henry Tonks, to national press acclaim.
The main influence on Barling was artist Frances Hodgkins, whom she met at her class at Burford in 1923 and with whom she painted abroad. When World War II broke out Barling moved to Studland, Dorset, teaching at Bryanston School, 1940–43. Barling was a fine draughtsman rather than a notable colourist and was fond of working in gouache, as seen in her memorial show at Dorset County Museum, Dorchester, in 1977. She rarely exhibited during her lifetime showing on only a few occasions at the Goupil Gallery, International Society of of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers and the London Salon. Her death was recorded at Corfe Castle, Dorset.
