Elliot H. Marten (fl.1866-1901) - 1889 Watercolour, Highland View, Evening Mist
DescriptionA fine watercolour landscape of the Scottish highlands from well listed Scottish artist Elliot H. Marten (fl.1866-1901). Marten is listed in the 'Dictionary of Victorian Painters' and is known to have exhibited work at the Royal Academy in the 1880's. This atmospheric watercolour transports you directly to the untamed landscape of Marten's homeland, and takes direct influence from the great romantic landscapes of the 18th century. The artist has wonderfully captured the mood with carefully considered brushstrokes, skilfully depicting the sun setting on the dramatic vista, with low evening mist slightly obscuring the hills in the distance. The watercolour is well presented in a gilt effect frame and gold mount. Inscribed on the reverse with the date and title of the work 'Evening Mist'. Signed. On wove.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing to the sky. There are some minor marks to the frame and very minor losses to all four corners, however these have been restored. Inspection under UV light reveals no other restoration. Overall in good condition.
