A beautiful, mountainous landscape in watercolour of truly impressive size for its age. The artist has created a serene moment, with cattle standing in the shallows of an expansive lake in the foothills of a great mountain range. The sun dances of the water in the distance and the hazy mountain tops fade into the sky.
The artist has signed and dated to the lower edge and the painting has been presented in a handsome, gilt effect frame with glazing.
On laid.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are areas of acid burn, particularly in the sky, including two more prominent vertical areas of discolouration, one down the full length of the left side of the painting and one down the right. The frame has a small loss at both the left hand corners but is in otherwise fine condition.

Edward James Du Val was a landscape painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Manchester Institution, and his work was shown in the Manchester gallery of Thomas Agnew.
He specialised in landscape paintings, mostly water-colours, often of river or lake scenery. He traveled widely to find suitable subjects and, when found, would paint several of the same scene with only minor differences. He exhibited paintings of views in the Lake District, Wales, Devon, Scotland, Oxfordshire and elsewhere. His pictures of rivers or lakes often include one or more swans.
The latter part of his life was spent in the South of England. In 1900 Edith married Francis Sellicks, a schoolmaster, and from then Edward and Emma Du Val lived with their daughter and son-in-law.
He died at Richmond in 1923 aged 85 years. His wife Emma Du Val had died there in 1913 aged 71 years.
