Description

An impressive but understated still life in oil by British 19th Century painter Edmund Morison Wimperis (1835-1900). The artist's delicately considered style and muted colour palette perfectly capture the natural forms of the subject, contrasted heavily with a dark setting. Well-presented in a fine gilt wooden frame with running egg and dart mouldings and gilt slip. Monogrammed to the lower corner. Signed with monogram. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor surface dirt. The frame contains some very minor surface scuffs. Overall in fine condition. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

Artist Biography

Edmund Morison Wimperis (1835-1900) was an English wood-engraver and watercolour painter from Chester, UK. In 1851, Wimperis was apprenticed to a wood engraver, Mason Jackson, for seven years. He also trained under Myles Birket Foster. From about 1863, he worked for the publisher Joseph Cundall and for the Illustrated London News. In 1873 he became a professional landscape watercolourist and member of the Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, where he was elected Vice-President in 1895.
