Artist Biography
Edgar Thomas Holding (1870-1952) was a painter of landscapes in oil and watercolour, born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Nothing is known of his art education and he was recorded in the 1911 census as a 'Master Tailor'. It is, therefore, reasonable to assume that he did not turn to full-time painting until his more mature years. Holding was a prolific exhibitor and in 1929 was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society. He also showed at Archer Gallery, Cooling Galleries Gallery, Fine Art Society, Grosvenor Gallery, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Goupil Gallery, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Scottish Academy, and Walker's Gallery. He was Secretary of the Society of Sussex Painters and also a member of the Art Workers' Guild. His paintings are in the collections of Atkinson Art Gallery, Ferens Art Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, NRM, Whitworth Art Gallery, and Worthing Art Gallery. He died in Chichester, Sussex.
