Artist Biography

Painter, printmaker, illustrator and teacher.
Born in Cowling, Yorkshire and attended Skipton School of Art and Science (now Craven College), studying bookbinding, textile design and craft under W.T. Shuttleworth. He then attended Leeds College of Art and from 1923-5 the Royal College of Art where he was a silver medalist. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1925 and then subsequently regularly at the Annual Exhibitions. Appointed in 1926 to Doncaster School of Art where he taught life drawing and bookbinding and to Leeds College of Art 1928-34. Principal of School of Art, Tunbridge Wells 1934 until retirement in 1965. Elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1950 and to the Royal Society of Painters Etchers (RE) in 1970. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, also in New York, Melbourne, Chicago and in many British Council touring shows. His work is held in the V&A Museum, the British Museum and other British and foreign collections. He lived in Tunbridge Wells and a retrospective exhibition was held in the Art Gallery there in 1973. The centenary of his birth was marked by a display at the Bankside Gallery, London in 1999.
