A fine detailed architectural view of the Barbican and a stone bridge in the town of Sandwich, Kent, England. The artist has chosen an interesting angle in order to compose the picture, with a muted palette and an emphasis on shadow. The Barbican was built in the late 14th Century, with a timber-barrelled archway and two chequered round towers, and the Portland stone bridge was completed later, in 1773. On canvas laid to board. Unsigned and inscribed.
Condition
In good condition overall, with a small area of surface abrasion to the left side, and some surface marks. There is some fraying to the edges of the canvas, and a small diagonal crease to the upper left corner, as shown.
