Early 20th Century Oil - Portrait of a Lady
Description
A fine portrait of a woman with a tilted head and engaging expression. She is dressed in the fashion of the late-1810s, typified by an increasing taste for lace, ribbon, and fur accessories while still maintaining predominantly narrow sleeves and a Neoclassical waistline. The guard chain around her neck is subtly veiled in part by her lace coverlet. Presented in a fine gilt-effect wooden frame with ornate foliate strapwork and a gilt-effect slip. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The canvas has been lined. Inspection under UV light reveals a horizontal line of retouching above the mouth of the subject and at the left side. There are some scuffs, marks, and areas of restoration to the frame and slip.
