Description

A truly striking and impressively sized architectural view of a French cathedral in an ornate Gothic style. The painting is in thinned oil that looks like gouache, due to the thinness with which it is applied to the canvas and the crisp line work and lack of colour blending. Women in traditional dress gather to sell, chat and buy at the foot of the church walls. The painting is unsigned and handsomely presented in a substantial early 20th Century gilt frame. The frame boasts a delicately hatched cove and intricate moulding at the outer edge. The frame is finished with an arch window gilt slip. On canvas.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration. There is a seam to the canvas at the upper left. The internal slip has some cracking, particularly in the upper right corner. The frame has some losses to the moulding at all edges.
