Early 20th Century Oil - Daydreaming
Description
A wonderfully simple, yet intimate oil portrait of a woman caught in thought. The sitter has a far off look in their eye and a very slight lift to the corner of her mouth suggesting a mere whisper of a smile. The artist conveys a huge amount of character and there is clearly a strong relationship between sitter and artist, shown in the domestic intimacy of this portrait. The understated palette lets the personality shine through. The woman's hair and attire date this painting around 1930/40.
The painting is unsigned and presented in a late 19thC laurel leaf and berry carved gilt frame with a gilt slip.
On canvas laid to board.Condition
Under UV light inspection, the painting shows an area of restoration to a scratch to the lower left corner which is not visible without UV light. There is a black mark to the sitter's neck. The painting is in otherwise good condition. The frame has an area of restoration to the lower left corner which is not noticeable. There is a small loss to the gilt at the upper edge of the slip, other than this the frame is in fine condition.
