This exquisite miniature portrait shows a young Mary Queen of Scots. During the early 19th Century there was a revival of the interest in Queen Mary after the publication of Walter Scott's novel "Waverley." A particular installment of the Waverley series called "The Abbott" focused on the escape of Queen Mary from Lochleven Castle. The novel was published in 1814, after which much artwork based around Queen Mary was produced. This is a particularly fine example of a miniature portrait of that era with beautiful detail picked out in her ruff and a most delicate blush on her cheeks.
The painting is unsigned and has been presented in a glazed, oval, brass frame with round hanger. The picture has backed with green velvet and there is a label at the back saying "Queen Mary."
On bone like substrate.The painting has a light grey bloom across the left hand side and in parts of the dress. The frame has two of the original pins missing at the bottom and some tarnishing to the brass but is in otherwise fine condition.
