An accomplished watercolour study depicting two sisters against a pastoral background. The artist captures the women in exquisite detail, with an intense focus on light and texture in the pair's clothing and hair. Finer details such as the lace on their dresses and the delicate fringes on the jackets add to the luxurious nature of the portrait, perfectly reflecting popular fashion trends during the 1830s and 40s. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with swept edges and fine floral details. The frame is placed in a gilt shadow box with velvet lining. On white bone-like substance.
Condition
The condition is very good for a painting of this age, retaining vibrancy in colour. The substrate is slightly coming away from the mount at the top of the piece which has been slightly warped over time. There is some light marking to the top left of the piece, lightly covering the woman on the left's forehead. There is some light scuffing to the exterior gilt frame, and small losses to the inner and outer edges of the frame.
