This very impressive and delicate portrait by an unknown, but nevertheless, skilled artist depicts a young lady wrapped in a white shawl with a crown of leaves placed upon her head.
The attention given to the woman's facial features and sensitive handling of tone perfectly captures the essence of the sitter; her demure smile and idealized face demonstrates a commonly used practice by 19th century artists to convey a sense of etiquette, as well as social expectations for women in society. The small size and depiction of her loose and flowing hair suggests that this portrait could be a more personal commission, as she gazes directly at the viewer. This painting also exemplifies the darker and simpler style of the 1820s favoured by the Romantic artist Thomas Lawrence.
A barley visible inscription on the reverse has been all but removed with time, the letter 'L' can just be made out. Painted on oak panel.
Unsigned.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. A very minor area of overpainting to the lower left. Minor surface marks, a 5cm diagonal mark to the lower edge and areas of paint loss to the outer edges, possibly caused by a previous frame. The painting has been finished with a very shiny varnish, possibly at a later date.
