This vibrant early 19th century gouache depicts the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, specifically the eruption of 1822. The painting shows heavy plumes of smoke rising from within the volcano as boats sail in the water nearby. Unsigned. Inscribed and dated to the lower margin, behind the mount (please see photos). Beautifully presented in a birdseye maple wood frame. Purchased with another by the same hand. On paper.
Condition
Light discolouration to the paper. A fold line is noted to the lower margin. Light wear to the frame, including scuffs and small chips to the edges.
