Donald James Hughes (1881-1970) was a painter and poet. He was educated in Bristol and studied at Heatherley's under Iain McNab and Henry Gibbs Massey and in 1914 was elected a member of the Bristol Savages. At this time he was an Auctioneer and Estate Agent but following early retirement he turned to painting and in 1924 staged a solo exhibition at the Clifton Arts Club. As an artist, he worked predominantly in watercolours and acted as President of the Savages in 1934, 1944, 1954 and finally in 1963. He was also elected an Associate of the Royal West of England Academy and his work is in the collection of Bristol City Art Gallery.
