Artist Biography
Cornish artist Dick Gilbert (1935-2008) "belonged to a coterie of Cornish-born and bred artists who proved a visually distinctive minority within the mid-century St Ives school" (The Independent, 2009). Born in Hayle, he served in the RAF before joining the Penwith Society of Artists. He exhibited regularly with the group, and also held solo exhibitions in London at the Rawlinsky Gallery and the New Vision Centre Gallery. He undertook a myriad of jobs to make ends meet and to support his family, including waiting tables in St Ives, working as a postman, and lorry driving, until finally he took up training to become a practitioner of the Alexander Technique. He went on to teach in Norway, Germany, Denmark, London and around Europe, settling in Finland with his fourth wife. He returned to Cornwall in 1997, and died in Hayle in 2008.
