Description

A richly atmospheric late 19th-century still life by Désiré Alfred Magne (1855-1936), featuring a generous slice of pumpkin arranged alongside ripe plums, a decorative golden chalice and a dark glass vase. The carefully considered composition combines warm, earthy tones with deeper shadows, creating an intimate and wonderfully evocative mood. Particularly appealing is the artist's use of impasto, with thicker, expressive passages of paint used to capture the distinctive texture and ridges of the pumpkin. The varied surfaces of the fruit, glass and metal are sensitively observed, demonstrating Magne's skill in creating both texture and depth. A sophisticated example of late 19th-century still life painting. Signed lower left. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Maintains a desirable character and patina. Fine craquelure observed throughout. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Minor surface marks and abrasions. The frame has minor surface wear and scuffs. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.
