A view of Holly Bush Hill in Hampstead by the well listed British watercolourist Dennis Flanders, who painted many London street scenes. 5 Holly Bush Hill was the home of the great painter George Romney, and later the home of Clough Williams-Ellis. Signed and dated and inscribed. On wove.

Collection Information

The house was designed for Romney by Samuel Bunce in 1797-8, as a studio and gallery. It was constructed on the site of the stables of an eighteenth century mansion, No.6 The Mount. Sold by Romney some years before his death, it was then used as The Hampstead Assembly Rooms. In 1929-30, the house was substantially remodelled by Clough Williams-Ellis as his own home and as the office for his practice. The house is now subdivided, part being run as a public house, and part in use as a private residence.

Artist Biography

Dennis Flanders was a painter and illustrator, mainly of topographical subjects in watercolour. Destined to become an artist, he was the son of miniaturist painter Jessie Marguerite Flanders, who was awarded the Princess Louis Medal at the amazingly early age of 7. Dennis studied at Regent Street Polytechnic during the years just preceding World War II and later furthered his studies at St. Martin's School of Art and the Central School of Arts & Crafts. His first works were published in the Daily Telegraph in 1938 and he also worked for the Yorkshire Post and the Birmingham Post, 1950-51. Flanders was also employed as a Special Artist to the Illustrated London News under Bruce Ingram from 1956-64. Flanders held his first solo exhibition at Colnaghi's, London in 1947. He also showed at the Essex Art Club, RA, RWS and RBA and was an elected member of the latter two societies. Latterly he held a solo exhibition at the Catto Gallery, London in 1990. Examples of his works are in the Imperial War Museum, the National War Collection, Guildhall, London and in Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Southport Art Gallery, Bath Museum and Art Gallery, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, Canterbury Royal Museum and Art Gallery, Bury Art Gallery and Lincoln Art Gallery and in the collection of the Bank of England.
