David Woodlock (1842-1929) - Watercolour Flower Seller in Venice
Description
A superb late 19th/early 20th century watercolour by the acclaimed Irish artist David Woodlock (1842-1929). This an excellent example of Woodlock's oeuvre, which cantered on quaint- typically Victorian, chocolate box scenes . In this particular composition the artist shows a flower seller, delicately positioned on the steps of Doge's Palace in Venice. The artist's masterful handling of watercolours is evident in the subtle way he uses small brushstrokes to build the purple and pink hues of the flowers. The blushed cheeks of the flower seller are typical of Woodlock's distinctive impressionistic style. The painting is inscribed 'Venice Flower Seller in the Courtyard of the Doge Palace' on the reverse. With an exhibition sticker detailing the artist as David Woodlock, exhibitor at a number of important galleries including The Royal Academy,Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are a number of foxing spots and mountburn visible to the edges of the artwork.
