David Roberts - Early 19th Century Lithograph Tiberias On The Sea Of Galilee
Description
An expansive lithograph showing a broad view of the City of Tiberias on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. This lithograph was taken from sketches David Roberts (1796-1864) made on his long tours of the Holy Land and this collection was what he was best known for in his career. The landscape shows a group of vibrantly dressed figures in the foreground. Their tiny size gives scale to the vastness of the landscape before them. The artist has signed in the plate at the bottom right and the bottom left has been inscribed with the title and date of the original painting. The print is presented in a grey wash-line mount in a thin reeded gilt frame with a grey inner window. Signed. On wove.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is foxing to the surface of the painting particularly in the top half. There is some dirt trapped behind the glass.

Artist Biography
David Roberts RA (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
