Artist Biography
David Law was a watercolour painter and etcher who specialised in landscape painting. He initially studied under steel engraver George Aikman before attending the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh from 1845-1850 where he studied under Alexander Christie and Elmslie Dallas. Law was an active exhibitor, showing at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, Society of British Artists, Fine Art Society, Dowdeswells, Agnew's and Dudley Gallery Art Society. He also exhibited at the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Royal Hibernian Academy, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Manchester City Art Gallery and Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He entered membership of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1881. In 1884 he was elected a member of the Society of British Artists and in 1887 he became the society’s Treasurer, that is, during James McNeill Whistler’s Presidency (1886-88). Law lived in London towards the end of his life at 9 Regent's Park Terrace with his daughters the watercolour landscape painters Annie Jane Law (1857-1943) and Eliza Amy Beatrice Law (known as Beatrice, 1862-1912). The Penlee House Museum has an example of his etching. His demise was recorded in Worthing, Sussex.
