Artist Biography
Daniel Sherrin was a painter born in Twickenham, Middlesex to the watercolour artist John Sherrin, (1819-1896). Daniel Sherrin was a pupil of landscape painter B.W Leader and thus Sherrin himself followed his teacher. He painted scenes in the southern counties and Eastern England and many of his works were used to illustrate books. Daniel Sherrin contributed to the war effort during World War I by designing recruitment posters and was also commissioned to paint Sandringham by King George V. The painting still hangs allegedly in Buckingham Palace. Unusually for a Victorian/Edwardian artist, he appears never to have exhibited his work. As well as his usual signature as detailed below some authorities state that he occasionally signed his works 'L Richards' or 'Horace Gallon'. He is well represented in museums across the country, these include Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, Bury Art Museum, Ferens Art Gallery, Haworth Art Gallery, Laing Art Gallery, Margate Old Town Local History Museum, Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery, Salford Museum and Art Gallery and Warrington Museum and Art Gallery. He died in Whitstable, Kent. His son Reginald Daniel Sherrin (1891-1971) was also an artist, primarily in watercolours who specialised in moorland and coastal views. Like his father, he did not exhibit his work.
