A beautiful early 20th century watercolour study of Haytor Rocks in Dartmoor, Devon, with Dartmoor ponies grazing on heather in the foreground. The painting is inscribed with location and signed by Cyril Hardy. It is excellently presented in an antique effect modern frame.
This may be painted by Cyril Hardy (1889-1951) who was a renowned early 20th Century watercolourist who specialised in Middle Eastern scenes. There is a school of though that this Cyril Hardy was a pseudonym of Noel Harry Leaver, who was a watercolourist painting English landscapes, along side Middle Eastern scenes. Another school of thought is that the two are separate artists, and Leaver's agent employed Hardy to replace Leaver at some point, in order to maintain production of the popular Middle Eastern scenes. The present painting has similarities to the brushwork and use of colour that Leaver used. The signature is not the same as the one used by Hardy on many of his Middle Eastern scenes, but perhaps this is an earlier work of his. We cannot confirm this with absolute certainty.
