Description

A fine engraving from the illustrated translation of Homer's Iliad by John Ogilby. The engraving is after Abraham van Diepenbeeck. The scene shows Aphrodite coming to rescue Paris from Menelaus. Inscribed in Latin to the lower border. Presented in a black frame with a gilt slip. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is light foxing and a small section of damage to the knee of Paris. .

A fine group of heroic engravings by Cornelis van Caukercken (1626-1680) after original drawings by Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596-1675). Produced as illustrations to John Ogilvy's edition of Homer's The Iliad in 1660, and first published by Thomas Roycroft, London.
