A finely detailed engraving by François Vivares (1709-1780) after Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). The scene depicts the maiden Europa seated upon a white bull, which is actually Jupiter (or Zeus) in disguise. In Greek and Roman mythology, the god becomes enamoured with Europa and disguises himself as a white bull to abduct her. Once she is upon his back, he runs to the sea and swims to Crete, making her the first queen of the island. The work is inscribed below the image with the artists' names and publication date, as well as a dedication to Sir Joshua Reynolds, President of the Royal Academy and owner of the original painting. The original is now held by the Getty Museum. Well presented in an antique wooden frame. On paper.
