A captivating acrylic painting with graphite details by the artist Colin Melbourne, depicting an abstract scene, entitled 'Divided Waters'. Signed and dated to the lower right-hand corner. The title and the artist's name are inscribed on the reverse. Well-presented in a double card mount and in a simple, gilt-effect frame. On paper on canvas.

Painting in fine condition. Small marks and light foxing to the mount. Some scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Colin Melbourne (1928-2009) was an artist born in Newcastle-under-Lyme. His early training was at Burslem School of Art and with Josiah Wedgwood Ltd, before he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, 1948-51. His major commissions included his 1987 statue of footballing legend Sir Stanley Matthews was unveiled by the man himself in Hanley, near Stoke. He also created a life-size portrait of Sir Henry Doulton and the 'Fighting Steelman' statue, which Melbourne designed in 1974 to support the failed campaign to save the Shelton Bar steel works from closure. It is located outside the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. As a teacher, he went on to become Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at North Staffordshire Polytechnic and a prominent figure in art education nationally. He also acted as chairman at the Three Dimensional Design Board at the National Council for Academic Awards. Latterly after his retirement from teaching, he devoted most of his time to painting, exhibiting some of his endeavours locally in the Potteries.
