A dramatic and gestural river scene in oil showing a rocky stretch of the Skootamatta River. The artist has signed to the lower left. In A frank, impressionist style, this Canadian landscape is an overall, very aesthetically pleasing object, presented in a gilt frame with linen cove. There is a label at the reverse with information about the artist and how to care for the painting. The artist has inscribed the title and location to the reverse. On board.

In fine condition. Minor discolouration to the linen cove of the frame and some surface dirt.

The Skootamatta River is a river in the Lake Ontario drainage basin in Hastings and Lennox and Addington Counties in Ontario, Canada. It flows from Joeperry Lake to join the Moira River in Tweed. The river's name is thought to come from Ojibwa words meaning "burnt shoreline"

Canadian artist Clifton Wellington Greer was born in Toronto in 1904. the studied art at OCA under Lismer, MacDonald, Panton, and F.S. Haines. His chief interest was landscapes in oil. the believed that “a great painting, should hold the mirror up to life, reflecting an enhanced beauty,i.e. truth without distortion.”
Clifton held exhibitions in Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and other parts of Canada where “the is recognized throughout the country for his magnificent Canadian landscapes.” the lived in Lorne Park, Toronto.
