Artist Biography
Clifford Isaac Addams (1876-1942) was a painter and etcher, born in New Jersey, USA. He was a pupil of Whistler and studied in Belgium, Holland, Spain, France, Italy, and London. He was a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers. He showed at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and, during the early years of the century, at the principal British venues including NEAC, GI, and RHA. Addams won the first scholarship prize, $800, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1899 and entered the art school of James McNeill Whistler in Paris. Following Whistler’s death, he moved to London and married Inez Bate, an English lady who also studied under Whistler. In 1920, he left his wife and family and returned to the USA, where he was eventually elected President of the Philadelphia Society of Etchers in 1930.
