Robert Lillie was an etcher, painter, and banker born in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the eldest of nine children of a bank teller. He exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Scottish Academy, and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Lillie donated a substantial amount of money to enable the creation of the Milngavie Art Gallery, better-known as the Lillie Art Gallery. Furthermore, he left a substantial number of paintings - over 350 - to the gallery's archives. There is also a work by Lillie in the collection of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
