Artist Biography
Clifford Isaac Addams (1876-1942) was an American painter and etcher, and a protege of James MacNeill Whistler. He was born in New Jersey, USA, and studied in Belgium, Holland, Spain, France, Italy, and in London. He was a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers. He showed at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia and during the early years of the century at the principal British venues including NEAC, GI, and RHA. Addams won the first scholarship prize, $800, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1899, and entered the art school of James McNeill Whistler in Paris. Following Whistler’s death he moved to London, and married Inez Bate, an English lady who also studied under Whistler. In 1920 he left his wife and family and returned to the USA where he was eventually elected President of the Philadelphia Society of Etchers, 1930.
