Artist Biography
Claude Rowbotham (1864-1949) was one of a large family of professional artists, Rowbotham was born in London, moving to Wallingford in the Thames Valley during the 1890s. In 1902, he moved to Cornwall, where he is recorded as having occupied a studio at Upton Slip, Falmouth, between about 1906 and the late 1920s.
Rowbotham was an accomplished watercolour painter, but is perhaps most interesting to the art historian for his invention of a process of producing limited edition aquatints that were often combined with etching in colour, the secret of which he seems to have guarded jealously. A studio sale of his works was held at auctioneers W. H. Lane, Penzance, in December 2000.
