One of a large family of professional artists, Rowbotham was born in London, moving to Wallingford in the Thames Valley during the 1890s. In 1902 he moved to Cornwall, where he is recorded as having occupied a studio at Upton Slip, Falmouth, between about 1906 and the late 1920s. He was an accomplished watercolour painter and is also known for his invention of a process of producing limited edition aquatints that were often combined with etching in colour.
