Circle of Edward Matthew Ward RA (1816-1879) - Under the Mistletoe
Description
A charming 19th-century genre scene in the style of Edward Matthew Ward, RA (1816–1879), depicting a moment of festive folly set in the Caroline era. A gentleman, with playful intent, leans forward to offer a sprig of mistletoe to a lady, who regards him with a look of disapproval. The composition is rich in detail and is characteristic of Ward's flair for narrative. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with an oval slip. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a painting of this age, including fine craquelure, minor abrasions to the surface and light discolouration to the varnish. The canvas has been relined. The frame shows signs of wear consistent with age, including scuffs, stable cracking and small losses to the ornaments. Areas of the frame have been touched in. Some scuffing and light staining to the slip.
