A charming nautical scene by Christopher Maskell (1846-1933) depicting a large sailing barge in choppy waters. Figures can be seen on board riding out the waves as they travel with the wind. Signed to the lower left. The oil has been well presented in a substantial gilt-effect frame with various running patterns. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Previous restoration work has been carried out on the oil. The canvas has been fully relined to the reverse. The gilt-effect frame is in a distressed condition. However, this adds to the painting's character. Small chips and stable cracking are present on all rails.
