After Christian Leberecht Vogel (1759–1816), this fine copy depicts the artist's sons, Carl Christian and Friedrich, leafing through a picture book before a courtyard landscape. So highly sought-after was the composition that Vogel himself produced several copies; one version, purchased by King Frederick Augustus of Saxony, is now housed in the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden. Presented in a modern gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure observed to the left of the young child's bare foot and perimeter of the canvas. Minor surface marks and abrasions at the corners. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. The frame has minor surface wear. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
