The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor surface marks. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Minor scuffs to the frame.

Charles Stephen Meacham (1860-1940) was an artist born in Catford, Kent. Meacham studied at Birmingham School of Art, and subsequently worked as a painter, illustrator, illuminator and poster designer. He also taught part-time at Bournville School of Art and at Wolverhampton School of Art. Meacham travelled to South Africa in 1919 where he and his wife remained until c.1923. While there he was employed by Ohlsson’s Brewery, brewing being his main trade.
Back in England Meacham participated in the 17th exhibition of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society at the Royal Academy in London in 1926. Between 1924 and 1933 he also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London; the Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, Wales; the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Examples of his work are in the collection of Gracefield Arts Centre and Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery. He died in Godstone Green, Surrey.
