Charles Mazelin, born Charles Firmin Mazelin on February 14 1882, in Elbeuf. In 1897 he joined the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris and the following year the National School of Fine Arts, where he worked in the workshops of Jules Jacquet for engraving and Comont for painting. He received the Prix Stigman and two Prix de Rome in 1906 and in 1908, which earned him to stay at the Villa Medici in Rome. Mobilized and wounded in Verdun, he painted during his convalescence an album of etchings entitled: Front of Somme. In 1939 he engraved his first stamp, at the instigation of his engraver friend Jules Piel. After having created more than 90 stamps in thirty years of career, he died on August 21 1968, in the 15th arrondissement, Paris.
