Charles Lloyd Shayes (1860-1937) - Oil Dutch House, Canvey-on-Sea

Description

A view of one of the two surviving Dutch cottages at Canvey Island on the Thames estuary. Canvey Island was drained and largely embanked by the Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden in the 17th century. As a result of the work that was undertaken on Canvey, numerous Dutch workers and their families settled in the area and built unusual miniature cottages. Presented in a gold-painted wooden frame with leaf and berry moulding to the inner edge. Signed to the lower-left corner. There is a plaque at the lower edge of the frame that is inscribed with the title and the name of the artist. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

There is some stable craquelure, discolouration to the varnish, and mild surface dirt. There is a small pinhole at the lower-right edge.

Artist Biography

Charles Lloyd Shayes (1860-1937) was a painter and picture framer born in Snodland in Kent. In the census for 1881 and 1891 his occupation is stated as Print Compositor. He later moved to Leytonstone where he was a picture framer and artist. It is believed he moved to Canvey Island in the Thames estuary in about 1920 and lived in a hexagonal-shaped house called 'Estoe' in Leigh Beck.
