A delightful 19th Century watercolour study of the Chateau de Blois. This architecturally stunning building is located in the city centre of Blois at the Loir et Cher department in the Loire Valley, in France. It was the residence of several French kings, and was also the place where Joan of Arc went in 1429 to be blessed before battle.
The artist Charles Jenyns has delicately captured this scene with a precise accuracy. Touches of gouache heightened the angles and depth within the composition, and it is clear that Jenyns has a thorough knowledge of the watercolour medium. Numerous figures give life to this architectural scene, each have been delicately captured.
Although we have been unable to fine much biographical information on Charles Jenyns, many of his paintings have been sold at auction in the past, including at Christie's.
Painted on wove laid to card. Inscribed with the location at lower right.
Signed with monogram.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor discolouration and light foxing. Overall the condition is very good.
