An evocative and detailed late 19th Century work in oil by the listed English artist Charles James Parry (1824-1894). A study of a rugged coastline, this fine naturalistic view has a remarkable sense of depth, and the artist's choice of a portrait composition allows for greater interest in the natural forms. Well-presented in a substantial gilt wooden frame with acroterion running pattern, inner beading and stepped gilt wooden slip. Signed to the lower left. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and scuffing. There is a tiny surface loss to the lower right corner. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The frame has some small losses and areas of surface restoration to the corners, with wear and marks commensurate with its age.

Artist Biography

Charles James Parry (1824-1894) was an English painter born in London, primarily of landscapes. The son of David Henry Parry the Elder, he was a businessman in Manchester, but painted as an amateur. He exhibited interesting landscapes in London at the Royal Academy and in the Suffolk Street Gallery.
