A fine and meticulously detailed watercolour landscape of the English countryside, by the Victorian artist Charles Horwell Woodman (1823-1888). The scene portrays two figures walking down a wooded path, with a meandering river, and a small village beyond with church spire. The artist has created texture in the composition, through the use of short brushwork and variation in the palette. The overall bucolic nature of the setting is enhanced by the balancing of the composition, with a sense of unity between the naturalistic and man-made elements. Signed 'C. Woodman' and dated 1874 to the lower left corner. Signed and dated. On wove.
Condition
The condition is very good for a picture of this age including some discolouration and age toning. The left and right edges have some minor abrasions with paint loss to the very edge.

Artist Biography
Charles Horwell Woodman (1823-1888) was an English Victorian artist, whose work mainly comprises of landscape settings. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, and has work in the collections at the V&A and the British Museum.
