Description

A picturesque scene depicting children playing outside a cottage by the river with the village green of Brockham, Surrey, in the distance. Presented in a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame with a gilt-effect slip. Signed to the lower-right edge. The title and name of the artist are printed at the lower edge of the mount. There are the remnants of a label verso, inscribed with the title. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is some mild foxing and discolouration. There is some debris trapped beneath the glazing and some areas of restoration to losses of moulding on the frame.

Artist Biography

Charles Gregory (1849-1920) was a painter of genre, landscape, and marine scenes primarily in watercolours also known as Charles Dickson Gregory. Born in London he studied at the RA Schools during the late 1860s and held a solo exhibition at Dowdeswell's Gallery in London's New Bond Street in 1887. Gregory exhibited more than 50 paintings and also showed at the FAS, GI, Walker Art Gallery, RBSA, MAFA, RA, RHA and at the RWS of which he was an elected member. He died in Marlow and should not be confused with a Victorian artist of the same name who lived and worked on the Isle of Wight.
