Charles de Chatillon (1777-1844) - Fine 1831 Watercolour St Anne with Visitors
Description
A remarkable and finely detailed original 1831 watercolour with gouache and gum arabic details, portraying The Virgin Mary and St. Joseph visiting St. Anne, often believed to have been the mother of Mary. The artist, Charles de Chatillon (1777-1844), employs minute layered brushwork, characteristic of his earlier work in miniature portraiture. His expert handling of the medium renders this religious scene in spectacular depth and colour. The elaborate dress of the figures, and richly patterned fabrics, have a marked impression on the viewer. This sumptuous view of religion is congruous with the artistic traditions of the period.
Handsomely presented in a wide cream card mount, and gilt moulded wooden frame, as shown. Inscribed to lower edge 'La Vierge et Saint Joseph visitent Sainte Anne. A Lady Marie Talbote'.
Signed and dated and inscribed. On wove.Condition
In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is a small area of brown staining to top left. Some foxing present to lower section. Very minor craquelure to areas of gum arabic.

Artist Biography
Charles de Chatillon (1777-1844) was a French painter, miniaturist and draughtsman. He was almost certainly the son of Charles-Michel Vaujours de Châtillon (1722-1787), Chevalier de Saint-Michel. Charles was reduced by the events of the French Revolution to the necessity of exercising professionally his talent in the fine arts. He exhibited miniatures and cameos from 1795-1808. He became secretary to Lucien Bonaparte, and followed him in exile to Rome in 1804. In 1842, Chatillon published a volume of memoirs on his years of exile.
