Description

A fine etching by well listed artist Charles-Albert Waltner after George Heming Mason ARA. The original painting, "The Evening Hymn," was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1868. It depicts a group of girls singing after an evening religious service. Waltner's etching of the scene was applauded by critics in 1882.

Mason's original painting's whereabouts is unknown with only Waltner's printed interpretation surviving as knowledge on what the painting looked like. When seeing the print, The Liverpool Mercury reported that they thought the subject "very poetical...translated with much feeling."

Signed in graphite to the lower right. There is a blindstamp and a remarque to the lower right.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a crease running vertically in the upper left quadrant and also creasing to the corners of the paper.
