A fine late 19th century portrait of a gentleman in 17th century attire. He wears a striking cartwheel ruff and a small medallion on a ribbon at his throat, painted with loose, confident brushwork against a dark ground in the manner of the Dutch Golden Age masters. Signed and dated indistinctly to the lower right. Listed alongside a companion piece (SZ469). On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips, and indentations. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
